Why should I choose to study my NVQ Level 2 in Playwork with JAM?

JAM Training & Education specialises in childcare training, consultancy, and pre-school education.

With hands-on experience as trainers, consultants and carers, it is essential that we have complete and up-to-date knowledge of all the latest childcare practices and regulations.  As such, you can trust us to deliver you the most comprehensive and relevant training in playwork.

The NVQ Level 2 in Playwork is open to individuals of all ages, who are interested in a career in playwork.

What will this course qualify me to do?

The NVQ Level 2 in Playwork award qualifies you to work in a supervised role in various childcare settings, such as:

  • Adventure Playgrounds
  • Holiday clubs
  • After School clubs
  • Childrens Centre Extended Schools

Are there any entry requirements for this course?

There are two requirements for NVQ Level 2 in Playwork:

  1. you must be working in a childcare setting, either as an employee, a volunteer or on a work placement
  2. you must be able to complete 150 hours placement / experience in a Playwork environment.

There are no formal exam qualifications, such as GCSEs or A-levels, required to apply for this course.

How long will it take me to complete this course?

Our NVQ courses are unique – we like to tailor your course to meet your particular needs, and to set the course to your own pace.  It usually takes between 6-9 months to complete our NVQ Level 2 in Playwork.

As the NVQ is a work-based qualification, you will continue working throughout the duration of the course, and our peripatetic assessors will visit you on-site to assess your work.

How are courses taught? Will I have to attend tutorials?

To complement the practical side of the NVQ Level 2 in Playwork – namely your workplace activities and tasks – we can also run group tutorials, twice a month.

The tutorials cover the theoretical aspects of the course, with the intention that you take the theory and turn it into practice at your workplace.

The group tutorials take place at either a children’s centre near your home or at the JAM office, with a maximum of 12 students per group.

What course materials will I need?

JAM will provide you with a folder of relevant material.

How will I be assessed?

The majority of the assessment for the NVQ Level 2 in Playwork is carried out by our peripatetic assessors, who will visit you at work and observe your general workplace activities with children, as well as practical tasks that you are set.  You will have to incorporate workplace observations into your portfolio.

Other forms of assessment that you may be asked to complete include:

  • Case studies
  • Reflective accounts
  • Witness testimony
  • Observations of work-based activities

How is the course structured?

The NVQ Level 2 in Playwork is made up of 6 units – 4 mandatory units and 2 optional units.  You must complete all 6 units to attain your certificate.

Mandatory units

  • PW 33 Support relationships in the play environment
  • PW 34 Work with children and young people to create play spaces and support freely chosen self-directed play
  • PW 35 Contribute to the health, safety, security and welfare of children and young people using the play environment
  • PW 36 Help to improve your own practice and the work of your Playwork team

Optional units

Please choose 2 optional units that best suit your responsibilities/job role.

  • PW 25 Contribute to providing food and drink in the play environment
  • PW 26 Facilitate a specific play opportunity at children or young people’s request
  • PW 27 Support the development of Playwork opportunities in the community
  • PW 28Contribute to supporting disabled children and young people in the play environment
  • PW 29 Support work with parents and carers in the play environment
  • PW 30 Carry out Playwork in a school setting
  • PW 31 Contribute to the administration of the play environment
  • PW 32 Support children and young people’s travel outside the play environment

Do you provide support throughout the course?

At JAM we have a number of accredited NVQ trainers and assessors, who will support and encourage you throughout the course.  You will also be assigned a mentor from our team of accredited NVQ trainers and assessors, who will offer advice and guidance as and when you need it.
